History tells us clearly that Thomas Jefferson, himself a slave holder, attempted to insert a clause into the Declaration of Independence opposing slavery but Congress would not agree.

Correct. I had only so much space in the column. I have an hour’s lecture on the Declaration.

I memorized the Declaration of Independence several years because it's an important document. I usually find a moment to recite it on July 4th. Your summary here was very good. Thank you and Happy Fourth of July!
